Certificate For Social-Environmental Commitment for Bertelsmann and Arvato Systems
Gütersloh - For the past several years, the nonprofit IT company AfB has been recycling phased out IT and mobile devices from the Corporate Center and Arvato Systems. This protects the environment and promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities – and now the engagement has been honored with a certificate.
The cooperation between the Bertelsmann Corporate Center, Arvato Systems and other corporate divisions with the nonprofit IT company AfB began in 2013 and is exemplary for the diversified corporate responsibility initiatives at Bertelsmann. Through the existing cooperation, the Group has been making a valuable social-environmental contribution to society for several years – and now, AfB has honored it with a certificate. AfB is Europe’s largest nonprofit IT company specialized in extending the product lifetime of phased out IT and mobile devices through their professional recycling and reselling. Almost half of the over 370 employees at the recognized inclusion company’s 19 sites across Europe are people with disabilities.

The hardware phased out by the participating Bertelsmann companies is recycled, and existing data is deleted based on a certified, data protection and data safety compliant process. The devices can then be resold in the AfB stores or affiliated online shops and include at least a one year warranty. Defective devices or devices that are too old are disassembled into individual components for spare parts; the raw materials are handed over to certified recycling companies. From January 1 through December 31, 2018, a total of 2,045 IT and mobile devices were processed for the Bertelsmann Corporate Center and Arvato Systems. A total of 67,679 kilograms of ferric equivalents, 158,466 kilowatt hours of energy, and 50,810 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents were saved in resources and emissions. The shares saved by Arvato Systems alone amount to 36,756 kilograms of ferric equivalents, 89,926 kilowatt hours of energy and 29,314 CO2 equivalents.
“The beauty of this partnership is the fact that we make a valuable contribution to the protection of resources and, at the same time, are able to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities,” said Matthias Marx, IT Consultant at Arvato Systems.
